Programme: Inclusive Economy Africa<\/h1>\n

With the Inclusive Economy Africa programme we describe the reasons for the economic exclusion in Africa as accurately and accessibly as possible. The benefits of high GDP growth have not trickled down to all parts of African societies. Economic inequality is on the rise and increasingly linked to political and cultural inequalities, which is threatening social cohesion and security.  We aim to clarify the various aspects of the issue for policy-makers and help them weigh the options in terms of policies and actions. In doing so, we also explore the possible blind spots of current policy standpoints. Inclusive Economy Africa is not designed exclusively for policy-makers in government, international organizations and NGOs. It is also aimed at academics, journalists and companies that want to play an active role in the economic development of the region.<\/p>\n

An important starting point of Inclusive Economy Africa is that inequality cannot be understood only from a national development perspective. We therefore pay special attention to embedding development processes in the context of financial and economic globalization, and to the role of international trade and aid. Furthermore, our analyses and recommendations integrate local social processes, such as the role of new emerging middle classes, the development of local innovative economic activity and social entrepreneurship. <\/p>\n

We offer extensive accounts of current academic discussions and policy debates, and refer to specialized thematic knowledge. We follow current trends and the constantly changing relations in the countries concerned with, for example, interactive overview charts. At the same time we also take the long term and more structural causes into account.<\/p>\n

The analyses are produced by our knowledge brokers, based on contributions and suggestions from a broad international network of experts associated with The Broker.The idea is to also present living analyses<\/a> for this programme modelled on what we developed for the Sahel Watch programme, which make it possible to include and clarify the latest developments in our analyses. <\/p>\n

Inclusive Economy Africa expands on a series of socioeconomic dossiers that The Broker published this past year, on inequality<\/a>, food security<\/a>, employment<\/a> and social protection<\/a>, social entrepreneurship<\/a>, and, most recently, the role of small and medium-sized enterprises<\/a>. <\/p>\n

We also make use of the expertise our knowledge brokers acquire in two of the knowledge platforms of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, most notably the Inclusive Development<\/a> and Food & Business<\/a> platforms.<\/p>\n

In March 2015, together with INCLUDE, The Broker organized a broad consultation for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on how to promote inclusive development in Sub-Saharan Africa. This consultation and our analyses<\/a> were the building blocks for the policy letter that Liliane Ploumen, the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, submitted to the lower house of Dutch parliament in the spring of 2015. Our knowledge brokers had a similar consultation in the fall of 2014 with the Food & Business Office<\/a>, which resulted in a letter to parliament on Food Security.<\/p>\n
